Why is Social Media Important to Small Businesses?

Updated: Nov 1, 2019

Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to share content quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. The ability to share photos, opinions, events, etc in real-time has transformed the way we live and, also, the way we do business.

But why is this technology important and how can it help small businesses succeed. One of the advantages of small business using social media is that they can respond to their target clients’ messages and comments faster than large businesses. This leads to connection with customers. Since small business owners know their customers, advertising is not that expensive. By just posting your products and services on the different platforms of social media, your network would be aware of sales, promotions and events which lead to the possibility that your followers will share it. This will then give you chances to increase your sales and will generate leads. Through social media also, your customers will be able to send you feedback. These good feedback will help you gain trust from your network.

Here are the ways on how we can optimize the use of the different social media platforms:

1. Be present and be active. Don’t just create an account. The reality is, it is better to not have a social media icon on your website if you are not going to actively engage with it—and actively means on a daily basis.

2. Know your target customers. Share posts that have contents which are important to them. You can do a survey about the products and services you are thinking about. Their opinion matters. This will engage them to your business and will create a dialogue with them.

3. Share posts with images attached. Photos are eye-catchers and are often shred by followers. This is the new form of "word of mouth" and it's what people mean when they say a post went "viral."

4. Use hashtags. Tag keywords of your business. This will help you reach out to those who are not following you. Hashtags will connect you to people who share the same interests with you.
